Why 600 DPI matters for prints
A standard 6×4 print scanned at 600 DPI produces a 3600×2400 pixel image — large enough to print at A3 without any loss of quality, and detailed enough to crop right into a face or background detail that wasn't visible before.

Resolution explained

Choosing the right resolution

DPI (dots per inch) determines how much detail we capture. Higher DPI means larger files and more detail — we'll always recommend the right setting for your material.

300
DPI
Good for documents and text-only pages where print quality is acceptable and file size should be kept small.
6×4 print → 1800 × 1200 px
800+
DPI
For very small prints, wallet photos, or where maximum detail is needed for large reprinting or restoration work. Available on request.
3×2 print → 2400 × 1600 px at 800 DPI

Why families across NI are digitising now

Photographic prints are fragile. Every year they sit in a box or album, they fade a little more. Digitising them is the single most important thing you can do to preserve your family history.

Stop the fading
Colour photographs lose vibrancy within decades. A 600 DPI scan captures the image at its best today — before more deterioration occurs.
Survive fire and flood
Physical photographs are gone forever if the worst happens. A cloud backup means your memories survive any disaster.
Share with everyone
Send your cloud link to family across Northern Ireland, the Republic, the UK, and further afield — instantly, at no extra cost.
Display & reprint
600 DPI files are large enough to reprint at any size — a beautiful A2 canvas from a photo that was only ever a 6×4 print.
A meaningful gift
A USB drive of digitised family photos makes a genuinely thoughtful gift — for a parent, a grandparent, or anyone who values their family history.
See hidden detail
High-resolution scans often reveal background detail, faces, and features that were never visible in small prints. Especially powerful with old or faded photographs.

Common questions

Photo scanning FAQs

Everything you need to know before getting started. Still have a question? Just get in touch.

A standard 6×4 photograph scanned at 300 DPI produces an 1800×1200 pixel image — barely enough to view on a modern screen without pixellation. At 600 DPI, the same print becomes 3600×2400 pixels (8.6 megapixels) — large enough to reprint at A3, crop into fine detail, and archive permanently. We scan at 600 DPI as standard because it's the minimum that does justice to a photograph.
We can scan prints of any size — from small wallet photos right up to 10×8 portraits and larger. Standard 6×4 and 5×4 prints are the most common. If you have oversized prints, just let us know when you enquire and we'll confirm we can accommodate them.
Standard output is high-quality JPEG for everyday sharing and viewing, plus a master TIFF file for each scan — which is the lossless archival format and what you'd use for large reprints. If you only need JPEG, that's fine too. All files are named clearly (we can use your own naming convention if you prefer) and organised into folders by date, album, or however you'd like them structured.
You can post your photos to us using Royal Mail Special Delivery or another tracked service — we'll confirm safe receipt by email when they arrive. Alternatively, you can drop them off in person at our Magherafelt location by arrangement. For larger collections across Northern Ireland, we can also arrange a collection from your home or office. Contact us to discuss whatever option works best for you.
Absolutely. Your original photographs are handled carefully throughout and returned to you in protective plastic sleeves — not loose in an envelope. We log every item when it arrives and confirm everything has been returned when it's sent back. We understand that many of these photographs are irreplaceable, and we treat them accordingly.
Yes. Both delivery methods are available and many customers opt for both — keeping the cloud link for easy sharing and the USB as a permanent physical backup. Just let us know what you'd prefer when you enquire and we'll include both in your quote.
A typical order of up to 200 prints is usually completed within 2-4 working days of receipt. Larger collections may take a little longer. We'll give you an accurate turnaround estimate in your quote, and you'll receive an email when your files are ready for download.
